Jazmyne's Review

The story begins with a somewhat vague description of a couple characters that have some unique qualities. We don’t get much history as to where they’re from or what their story is.

As the book progresses, we begin to understand what is going on and where these characters come from. Gabriel has been on earth for many more years than he looks, searching for his peace and future. Carmen has a special ability to speak to animals, but coming from the foster system, she has never gotten the chance to know her true parents or where the ability comes from.

I love stories like this! The characters have abilities because of an unknown, shared past. These characters not only share a past, but have an entwined future as well. As I was introduced to more characters, as well as their world, I felt more and more connected to the story. Although it’s based in fantasy, the characters are completely relatable.

Fantasy is always a great genre to read. There’s always something more fun about abilities and extra-ordinary experiences. It allows me to enter into a brand new world!

There were a few issues for me, but they were more personal preferences. Carmen’s attitude bothered me often, because even after she recognized that she was being mean, she seemed to not change. Also, some other personalities didn’t mesh well with me. Overall, though, an enjoyable read and I’m excited for the rest!
