Review: “The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett” by Chelsea Sedoti

The first thing that happened was Lizzie Lovett disappeared and everyone was all, “How can someone like Lizzie be missing?” and I was like, “Who cares?”

-I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.-

THE STORY (Goodreads):

A teenage misfit named Hawthorn Creely inserts herself in the investigation of missing person Lizzie Lovett, who disappeared mysteriously while camping with her boyfriend. Hawthorn doesn’t mean to interfere, but she has a pretty crazy theory about what happened to Lizzie. In order to prove it, she decides to immerse herself in Lizzie’s life. That includes taking her job… and her boyfriend. It’s a huge risk — but it’s just what Hawthorn needs to find her own place in the world.

THE GOOD:

I freaking loved this book. I was laughing, crying, and curled-into-a-ball-ugly-crying. (Lots of crying—happy and sad.) The author definitely wrote in a way that teenagers can resonate with (ignoring the beginning which made me kinda mad. Deets later.) It was funny, sparky, witty, and fresh. I enjoyed every moment and finished the book in one sitting. My lovely, precious lil book. WHO’S THE CUTEST LIL BOOK. YOU ARE. And Hawthorn. Kicks. Ass. I stood up and danced around at one point. I feel also that the book had important commentary to share concerning the world, expertly shielded behind a fantastic story.

THE BAD:

I really couldn’t get into the book until about the 20 percent mark, because the beginning sort of… flopped. It was super expositional and seemed to dredge along without offering much activity of interest. When it got going, it certainly got going, but I’m obligated to take this into account. The formatting and typos were difficult to deal with as well. But guys, real talk, the worst part was that this book couldn’t go on forever. I love Hawthorn so freaking much and I wanna hear every freaking detail about her wonderful freaking life. Loveeeeee. (I know this is the “bad” section but OMIGOD THIS BOOOOOOOOK GUYS)

THE CONSENSUS:

The second this book comes out, buy it. It was so flipping incredible. I literally want to cuddle with it like it’s a stuffed animal but it’s on my kindle. Plus, dang thing won’t hug me back for some reason. I DON’T NEED YOU ANYWAY, BOOK. I’m sorry baby I didn’t mean it like that, you know I love you.

BABY COME BACK. YOU CAN BLAME IT ALL ON MEEEE

#MyReview
When I start to read a new book so many thoughts goes through my head. Will I like it? Will I be addicted only from reading the first chapter? Will I vibrate and dream about this story?
Brie Paisley is a new author to me and when the opportunity arose to meet one of her works I did not hesitate. From only the prologue I knew I would live a roller coaster of feelings and emotions.
“Carter” is the first book of “The Harlow Brothers Series”.
This book is told by Shelby and Carter. Shelby is a lost soul. She was betrayed and deceived by those she trusted and is forced to flee, leaving everything behind and start a new life away from the cheating ex-husband and from all and everyone that hurt her. The fact that she had a childhood marked by her mother’s abandonment and by her father’s negligence made her an insecure person and with some serious trust issues. All she wants is to return to her hometown, even if she had sworn, thirteen years ago, that she would never come back, but she believes this city is the only place that she can find happiness again.
Carter is the older brother of five. He’s the one that is always there, ready to help when and where you need him. There is in him something pure and kind. For 13 years he suffered the absence of his best friend Shelby and blamed himself for her departure. They were lovers in high school, but something happened that separated them and from that day he never saw her again.
Can a love so strong cease to exist? Can they meet again and delete all these years of absence, hurt and pain?
This book had much impact on my way of seeing things, only came to show that there are no obstacles in life that we cannot overcome, no matter how bad they may seem there is always a turn to give.
The family, love, friendship and complicity are in great prominence in this book, but the betrayal, hate, psychological torture are also present.
Brie has a way of writing that appeals to the best we have but can also awaken the bad emotions as well. If you do not believe me, go grab your copy and start reading, then we can speak. And the hot scenes, you ask? Of course there is and you will be hot, very very hot …
I’m in love with this book and cannot wait to learn more about The Harlow Brothers.
I rated this book with 5 bookworm stars

Ball Peen Hammer: Book Review

BPH.jpgKeane Morgan wouldn’t return any of my calls or texts, and I was pissed as hell about it. I didn’t want to drive from Seattle to L.A. with the guy any more than he wanted to drive with me, but I had no frickin’ choice in the matter–at least, not if I wanted to use his brother Dax’s coveted parking spot at UCLA.

Okay, so it turned out Keane was objectively gorgeous, and, fine, pretty funny, too. But did he have to be so damned in love with himself? I mean, jeez, the cocky way he flashed those dimples was just so orchestrated. And, honestly, what kind of guy uses the phrase “baby doll” with a straight face? Oh, that’s right: the kind of guy who’s a male stripper.

Yup, the cocky jerk turned out to be Seattle’s answer to Magic Mike, a stripper known as “Ball Peen Hammer”–which meant Keane Morgan was emphatically not the kind of guy I’d ever fall for.

Not. At. All.

No freakin’ way.

Well, until Keane convinced me to fall for him, that is.

Which I did.

Hard.

Jazmyne Review

So, normally I don’t read a whole lot of RomComs. Don’t get me wrong, I watch a lot of RomCom movies and I love to laugh, but when I immerse myself into a fictional world I normally enjoy stories a little more rough around the edges. When I saw the blurb for Ball Peen Hammer, I thought to myself, “Hmm…I enjoyed Magic Mike, so this should be good.”

Guess what, y’all?

I. Was. Right.

We start our story by meeting Maddy & her sister Hannah as they converse on the phone. Let me tell you I was immediately laughing OUT LOUD. Like, fully belly laughing, wishing I was a part of their conversation. I was hooked. From the first stinking page. As far as the story would go, I was optimistic at this point, but … still had a few reservations.

Then I met Keane. My reservations were gone. He was absolute perfection. Was he a cocky, manwhore? Yes. But there was more to him. He had a personality that drew me to him-he was clever, funny, and kind of over the top. But all of that worked for him.

As I got into the story, Keane and Maddy were adorably oblivious to what was swirling around them. Their friendship was one of beauty, though. The way they bickered, shot insults at one another, mocked each other, but still found a way to support each other … brilliant. It’s, in a way, what I want in a relationship. You have that element of fun & friendship, but it reaches deeper to offer encouragement and support.

My absolute favorite part of this story was watching Keane come into himself. His life hasn’t been perfect, although Ball Peen Hammer would lead you to believe life was fantastic. Keane had never truly explored the idea of “feelings,” but he had never really thought about himself too deeply outside BPH. I love watching characters grow & change, being able to feel as though I’m along for the ride and a part of their growth. Keane was a perfect example of this. His character was written so realistically.

  • Also, Keane’s family. Freaking amazing. His brothers, his mom, dad, the in-law family members, the “adopted” family members … this whole world of characters made me want to stay and never leave.

Honestly, lately, I’ve been in a book slump–to the point of almost not wanting to read (*gasp!*) But ever since I read the excerpt reveal, I’ve found myself thinking about this book, this story. It’s like the characters were in my head just enticing me to read it. And as soon as I picked up the book, it’s like I was already accepted into their world and we were all friends.

Not often do I rate a RomCom with 5 stars, but … I am today.

Jazmyne Review.jpg
Carter is the oldest of a brood of brothers. A successful man, there’s always been something missing. Something that has a name, and a face, and is … well he knows exactly what’s missing. It’s something he had a long time ago, but let slip away. And now she’s back.
Shelby has run back to her hometown. Leaving behind a life that she realized was not good for her, she goes back to the only true family she has known. The problem with that is Carter. The boy who broke her heart so many years ago. She’s not sure how she can withstand him, or how she can keep him from breaking her heart again.
There were a lot of things about this book I loved. Carter’s family is AWESOME! The interaction between the brothers, their parents, and the all around feeling I got when I read about them was just how I’d imagine a family should be. Now, it’s not all hearts and rainbows, you can see some underlying problems, but the love still remains between them.I also loved Annie & William. You’ll learn more about them as you read, but they are such beautiful people and I so wish I had someone like them in my life.

I also genuinely liked the story. I love stories where people find love, lose it (for whatever reason), and then have to face their mistakes in order to find their way back. I’m even okay if they DON’T make their way back. When a story reflects real life is when I get hooked. I like stories that are messy, characters that make me angry, and events that don’t always go to plan.

The story, though, seemed to have some gaps. I know that an author doesn’t always choose certain details to be as important as I’d like them to be, but there just seemed to be some parts of the story that were … lacking. The story itself was good, but some paths of the storyline, I felt, could’ve more complete. That being said, I don’t think the story really suffered. And because this is the first of the Harlow brothers books, there could likely be follow-ups to some of these paths in future works.

I quite enjoyed this story and cannot wait to read more about the Harlow brothers!
(Caden & Clark particularly, *wink, wink*)

Review: “Angelfall” by Susan Ee

“Ironically, since the attacks, the sunsets have been glorious. Outside our condo window, the sky flames like a bruised mango in vivid orange, red, and purple. The clouds ignite with sunset colors, and I’m almost scared those of us caught below will catch on fire too.”

A Red Raven Reads Review of “Angelfall” by Susan Ee

angelfall

www.redravenreads.wordpress.com // www.booksarefood.wordpress.com

THE STORY:

Earth is a shell of what it once was; smartphones line the pavement, houses are raided nonchalantly, and people are being cannibalized for their nutrients. Why? The angels.

The angels took over civilization and left humanity in shambles. We meet protagonist Penryn as she tries to escape from a swarm of angels, only to have her little sister stolen. Penryn now must cooperate with the enemy, a darkly sexy former soldier angel named Raffe, if she ever wants to see her sister again.

THE GOOD:

This book is a dark, striking, beautifully accurate portrayal of humanity. For a simple “young adult” novel, it proves itself to be anything but. It sinks its claws in and refuses to let go until you’ve stepped off the ride. The writing is immensely powerful, the tension is palpable, the gore is grotesque, and this book is a FORCE ripe with worth and meaning. I’ve never loved a character the way I love Penryn. Her situation is “done before” but unique thanks to mind blowing character development and a fascinating family history.

THE BAD:

I tried so hard to find something bad to say about this. Really, I did. But I can’t. I love every bit of this book, every single intelligently-chosen word, every touching moment, every heart-stopping bit of action. All of it. I am undeniably, unequivocally in love with this book.

THE CONSENSUS:

I loved every moment of this book and could scarcely peel my hands from my kindle. I am not a series person and I find myself drooling over the idea of the next installment of the series. MORE SHIRTLESS RAFFE, PLEASE. (And the book boyfriend saga continues.) Further, I couldn’t find any personal or objective faults. This book, in my humble opinion, is a masterpiece. I truly think so.

THE RATING:

Romance. Intrigue. Gore. Love. Loss. One INCREDIBLE story I KNOW will be stuck in my head for months. And a very, very easy, 5 out of 5 star rating.

‪#‎MyReview‬
The Corridor is an Erotic Novella from Nicole Hart and as like the genre indicates the hot scenes are breathtaking. Let’s be honest, who does not like a spicy and sexy book? I do and I’m not ashamed to admit it.
As says the introduction, life is not only black or white also it can be gray and sometimes we should take a risk.
The Corridor is told by Sierra Richardson, she has the profession and the life she always wanted, but the routine made it dull, boring and predictable. She longed for something more, something different that spiced her life. For years she wanted to surrender to the pleasures of BDSM until one day she decided to take the risk. When she meets Cain something about her awake and just a little taste of him made her want more. And I say no more.
I can say I liked what I read, I was eager to read more; I wanted the story to continue, but the novellas are just like this short but very intense.
Can a person surrender to the unknown? You can do it without getting lost along the way? Is desire more important that common sense?
Nicole I’m a new fan of your writing and as such I will surely read more books from you.
I give this book 4 Bookworm stars.

So when I’m given the opportunity to explore my darkest desires, I’m torn between a physical need and a professional oath. But once I have a taste of Cain Hamilton, all of my sound judgement is gone. The consequences didn’t matter. I just wanted him. All of him, nothing else mattered.

Eminent Love By Leddy Harper

Romance

I give this book 5 stars!

How can a book put so much emotion in me? How was it possible for me to read and cry at the same time? Have you already experience this?
Eminent Love is the latest release from Leddy Harper and you all should read it. One simple advice? Have a tissue box near you, because you will need it.

Eminen love_smash

‪#‎MyReview‬
A new book, a new challenge, a new way to dream. It is always good to meet new authors, because each of them can enrich my mind and make me dream.
“Eminent Love” by Leddy Harper is a beautiful love story, inspired by a true story and so reading was so much more intense. This book explores the love story of Creed and Layne. This story is narrated by Creed and His speech alternate between Then and Now.
When Creed meets Layne something in him changes, something he never had felt before. One thing is for sure he don’t want to lose her, he wanted to chase happily ever after with her. All goes well until one day they had a huge fight and something happens.
Why do we have wrong attitudes when we are angry? Why is it that we only realize that we were wrong when we lose the person we love?
Love at first sight exists, I know pretty well what I’m talking about because I went through it and continue with the same love at almost 18 years and this book speaks of this. When we look at the right person in the eyes we just know it will be our other half, the one that will make us happy.
Leddy Harper has a simple speech and with so much attention to detail and the meaning behind each word, the way she tells this story is breathtaking and heartfelt. Through her speech we can dream and feel what is going on in the hearts of the characters at that exact moment.
“Eminent Love” portrays forgiveness, love, struggle, but focuses on grief and sorrow as well. In life nothing is guaranteed and so we must live intensely each day as if it were the last one without ever looking back.
When we think that everything will be okay, something happens that will shake the whole plot. I can guarantee that while reading I sent a few messages to my dear Leddy Harper because I was so angry with her, but I cannot tell you why. I recommend “Eminent Love” to all romantics around the world but I leave you with a warning:
This book is not suitable for extremely sensitive people because the level of feeling and emotion of this work is very, very, very high. On second thought, I think you all should read, read to be able to see what life really is.
Leddy you know that I love you so you are forgiven, but even so, to redeem yourself go write more books for me to read and dream.
I rated this book with 5 amazing bookworm stars.

Life doesn’t always start with once upon a time.
Love doesn’t always end with happily ever after.

After spending five years with the love of my life, I did nothing to stop her from walking away. She had her reasons to leave. I had my reasons to stay. But a year later, the realization of loss hits me, and I’ll stop at nothing to fix it. I leave everything behind to drive across the country to win her back, and I refuse to accept anything other than fulfilling old promises.

But the only certainty in life is: nothing is as expected.

The most valuable lessons don’t often revolve around a fairytale ending–frequently, they come from hurt and healing. They come from the kind of personal growth love offers. The mending of your heart, your soul, and your life. And every once in a while, you find the greatest gifts in the packages you never expected to open.
